So today was filled with a drive up to the White Mountains. First, the elevation at the summit was over 6,000 feet above sea level. Although, the weather was not clear and it was covered with clouds, it was very cool to say the least. It took us about an hour to drive up there and its in the north part of New Hampshire. The scariest ride was going up on the auto highway with no guard rails and the width of the road was about the width of one car. You looked down and all you saw was the tops of trees. To get to the White Mountains, you have to drive through Conway and North Conway. If you get the chance to stop in North Conway, there are a few places you absolutely need to stop. First stop is Zeb’s country store. A quant little store that sells everything and has a country setting. From pancake mix to jams and jellies to country type candy. A little bit for everyone. The next stop is House of Jerky right on main street. Every type of jerky from alligator, to buffalo, to antelope, and everything in between. I always stop in there and pick up a beef terriakyi jerky. Next stop is at the North Conway Olive Oil Company right next to the House of Jerky. The North Conway Olive Oil Company has infused olive oils that cover just about anything. They give you free tastings and these can be used as an olive oil or a marinade. Leaving North Conway and straight up 113 takes you to the White Mountains. At the top of the summit are a few gift shops and a place to grab some food. There is an observatory at the top that recorded the highest wind speed ever recorded at 231 mph. In fact last year they recorded the coldest weather in history at something crazy like -54 degrees F. I can’t even imagine how cold that is. From what I understand there are people that live year round inside the observatory. We spent a few hours on the summit and for me it was a little hard. A medical condition prevents me from taking in oxygen into the blood cells. I was out of breath for much of the trip, but like I said it was really cool. I took some pictures with the friends I was with and then it was time to drive down. From the bottom to the top was 8 miles and now what goes up must come down. Due to the weather I missed a lot of beautiful sights and I’m told that from the top, you can see the City of Boston through binoculars. We stopped in North Conway on the way back and stopped for a late lunch or an early dinner at the Muddy Moose. I ordered the ribs and they were pretty good but the whole rack was too much…the good thing it gave me left overs to take home to have later. A few drinks and food and we were off to drive back to Meredith. It was a good day and if I can ever figure out how to post pictures, I’ll post some of the pics of this trip. Tommorrow we venture out to Maine and get some fresh Maine lobster. Till next time….
